Changes in the 2nd Pension Pillar: What to Do with the Money?

Different forecasts suggest that next year, when people are allowed to withdraw their 2nd pension pillar funds, 40–50% of savers will do so. Many see this as an opportunity to indulge themselves—with new home appliances, a trip, or even a new car. However, these are only short-term pleasures. Another alternative is investing, whose main benefit is a long-term sense of security. Crowdfunding is not only one of the simplest investment tools, but also a source of investors’ success stories—showing how a few hundred or thousand euros can be turned into steady savings growth.

Quick decisions about your own money

In January 2026, everyone will be able to decide for themselves: continue saving in the 2nd pension pillar system, adjust contributions, or withdraw the accumulated funds.

“This is a major change—thousands will be making decisions about what to do with the savings they’ve built up in the 2nd pillar. But it’s not just more freedom—it’s also an opportunity to become an active investor, to make your own decisions, watch your savings grow, and if the results are unsatisfactory—make quick decisions about your money to achieve the desired outcome,” says Miglė Grybinienė, Head of Marketing at PROFITUS.

Why investing is better than spending

The goal of saving and investing is to ensure a sense of financial security for the future. For those looking for where to direct their accumulated funds, one of the options is crowdfunding. In this sector, PROFITUS has become a leading platform within just a few years.

Currently, PROFITUS unites nearly 46,000 registered users, more than 12,000 of whom actively invest. Since its inception, investors have earned €18.5 million, including €5.85 million in 2024 alone. This year, in the first seven months, their profit has already reached €3.48 million.

According to M. Grybinienė, the most important factors are responsibility and transparency, which attract investors of all ages. Moreover, the number of female investors on this platform significantly exceeds the overall proportion of women investors in Lithuania.

“Probably because we devote a lot of attention to educating people about the importance and benefits of investing. People appreciate our openness and, of course, our results. To become a market leader, you must have exceptional professionalism, a clear sense of responsibility toward investors, and very clear business goals,” says Grybinienė.

Real people, real stories

The overall PROFITUS figures are impressive, but they are best illustrated through real examples.

One investor, who since 2021 has consistently invested €100 several times a year, focusing on lower-risk projects, has achieved an average annual return of 8.63%, earning €339 in interest.

Another investor, who invested €5,000 across several short-term projects, earned €174 in just six months. A female investor, who joined in 2023, allocated between €500 and €3,000 to various real estate projects and has already earned €1,809, while her active portfolio currently stands at €5,000.

“These examples show that anyone can invest—both those who start with small amounts and those who commit larger capital. We even have investors whose portfolios reach hundreds of thousands of euros. That’s what makes crowdfunding so attractive—it unites both experienced and beginner investors,” says Grybinienė.

Older investors are joining too

PROFITUS is also increasingly attracting older investors. In the 55–64 age group, there are nearly 1,000 users, more than 100 of whom have made over 100 separate investments. One 55-year-old investor has made 502 investments, manages a €23,000 portfolio, and has already earned over €6,300.

“These results are the best proof that you can invest at any age—even just before retirement or after it. Your money can work flexibly, in small amounts, and without additional stress. By the way, it’s also an extra safeguard against fraud, since invested funds are much harder to steal,” notes Grybinienė.

A decision for today and tomorrow

2026 will mark the first year of these major changes, when every individual will be able to decide what to do with their 2nd pension pillar savings. It could be a chance to spend the money here and now, but even more importantly—to invest it and ensure a safer future.

The example of PROFITUS shows that by responsibly choosing an investment partner, your accumulated funds can continue to work and grow your capital. Therefore, when deciding what to do with your savings, it’s worth thinking more broadly—not just about today’s needs, but also about tomorrow’s peace of mind.

How to handle your withdrawn 2nd pillar funds? Financial advisors recommend:

-First assessing whether you truly need the money for daily purchases. If the decision is spontaneous, it may be wiser not to touch the funds.

-Consider investing—even a small amount, invested through a reliable platform, can generate returns that eventually become additional income.

-Age doesn’t matter. Whether you’re 30 or 60 years old, you can invest at any stage of life. Flexibility allows you to choose both the amount and the level of risk, making it accessible to everyone.

Every investment involves risk. Therefore, when starting to invest, it’s highly recommended to learn as much as possible and diversify your initial investments across different projects. The saying “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket” has never lost its relevance.
